Waiting it out...

3/21/2016

Mix of open water and unstable areas. Weather is above freezing during day but still below freezing at night.  The ice melt has slowed down significantly as a result of this colder weather pattern.  However, the snowfall from the end of last week is disguising some of the unstable areas.  Please use caution.  If you decide to venture out on the ice, always check the thickness of the ice along your path and remember it can change from the time you went out and become unstable.  I myself am waiting it out and staying off the ice.
Happy fishing! Selective harvest is the way to go.

Now that the game fish season is over we concentrate on panfish until May 7th.  It seems the ice has shifted and came up a little, now the temps will be above freezing during the day and most of the nights the standing water on the ice will now start running into the holes that will stay open bringing much needed oxygen to the water.  With this happening the majority of fish will start moving into the shallows.

Crappies: We have been getting them in the deeper weeds 8-12 foot of water jigging with plastics and using tip-downs with minnows.
Perch: Finding them on deep rock bars and on the mud flats jigging a tungsten live bait combo of wigglers, spikes, and waxies or crappie minnows.  The bite is good to very good during daylight hours.
Bluegills: Using small ice jigs tipped with plastics, spikes or waxies in shallow weed of 4-8 feet of water.
Happy fishing!  Selective harvest is the way to go.
