Keeping your Bait

Water and air temps are still on the hot side. Early morning and in the evening will still be the best fishing times. This time of year, it gets hard on your live bait, keep your crawlers and leeches in a cooler on ice, and your minnows in fresh cool water. Using plastic this time of year works well also, like Kalin’s crappie scrubs, you can catch bluegill, perch, and crappie on them; this saves you from having to mess with minnows. Fishing the green weeds is still the ticket. Still not a lot of changes in the summer pattern.

Northern Pike:  Fish are being caught while jigging in and along the weeds and by throwing spinnerbaits--bass style safety pin, Mepp’s #4 and #5, and spoons like the Johnson Silver Minnow.

Bass: Largemouth are being caught in and around structure like lay downs and docks using tube jigs, plastic worms, and top water baits. Smallmouth are on the rock piles and hard bottom breaks use crayfish imitating baits for these fish.

Walleye: Catching fish still on jig and minnow combos, swimbaits, and slip bobbers. Green weeds are still producing fish and also, I’m finding a few hanging around some cribs. Bugs are starting to hatch, so it is time to start using leeches and crawlers.

Panfish:  Perch are still being caught on jigs and slip bobber rigs alike; depending on the lake, you will need to switch to the mud flats because bugs are starting to hatch. Crappies can be caught in the weeds under slip bobber rigs using a hook and minnow or twitching a small jig tipped with a plastic under a bobber. Bluegills are moving into the shallows and can be caught slip bobbering tipped with plastic, waxworms, or a piece of crawler.

Muskie:  Bucktails, jerk baits and glide baits are still catching fish. Watch your locator for suspending fish out in the deeper water switching to rubber baits like Medusas and Bulldogs.
